Travel Directors have always loved railways. After all, the first escorted adventure we ever organised was on the Trans-Siberian Railway through Russia, a tour we are still running several times a year, almost a quarter of a century later!
We have now introduced a thrilling new portfolio of tours, featuring some of the world’s greatest, and most scenic, rail routes. Our first offering – Rail Across Europe – was an instant success and is now a firm favourite in our annual tour programme.
The tour embraces seven countries: Scotland, England, Wales, France, Switzerland, Austria and Germany, and features some fabulous journeys. There’s the West Highland line, which cuts through the glorious Scottish countryside; the Carlisle to Settle route through the Pennines and the Yorkshire dales and then a trip on Eurostar from Paris to London.
On the continent we travel on the breathtaking Glacier Express from Zermatt to St Moritz and finish in the fairytale German town of Wernigerode, home to one of the world’s last surviving steam railway services.
Following the success of Rail Across Europe we have introduced for 2013, Rail Across India, an exotic journey across the subcontinent, which features a week-long journey through Rajasthan on the world-famous Palace on Wheels. In addition we will travel to beautiful Darjeeling, in the foothills of the Himalaya, for a ride on the World Heritage-listed Darjeeling toy train. Further north we will travel from Kalka on an equally famous hill railway to extraordinary Shimla, the former British Summer capital of India. Our route also takes us to some of India’s other most famous cities, such as Varanasi, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Jaisalmer and Agra.
The newest addition to our ‘Rail Across’ portfolio, is Rail Across Spain and Portugal, a fabulous tour featuring a seven-night journey across northern Spain on the luxurious El Transcantabrico Gran Lujo. We also take the Lusitania Express for an overnight journey from Madrid to Lisbon, as well as several other stunning train journeys in both countries. We also visit all the great cities of Spain and Portugal including Barcelona, Granada, Seville, Lisbon and Porto. There are also side trips to Toledo and Evora and much, much more. And, needless to say, we have carefully selected some wonderful hotels along the way.
